The highly anticipated iPadOS 18 launch hit a snag with the latest iPad Pro models with M4 chipset. When some of these devices started entering critical issues and even became unusable, several reports were made after the release. Apple had to stop the update rollout for the iPad Pro 11-inch (2024) and iPad Pro 13-inch (2024) models because the problem was serious enough, and it was willing to compensate those people with iPads in the meantime.

That left many stuck on iPadOS 17 for well over two weeks while waiting for a fix. The update is now safe to install, as Apple responds finally. All compatible devices, meaning those running the bar just publicized iPadOS 18.0.1 will have being pushed to them. Their intent is to fix all the critical bugs that messed with these devices to keep users safe and having fun with the iPadOS 18 without the fear of bricking their device.

What’s Fixed in iPadOS 18.0.1?

Even though the update does not bring new capabilities, it is very important because it fixes some vital bugs. Here’s a look at what’s addressed:

  • Bricking Issue: The most critical fix is for the bug that caused some M4 iPad Pro models to become unusable. Apple quickly acted to correct this issue, ensuring that these iPads no longer face risks from the update.
  • Memory Allocation Problem: The update also resolves a bug that led to performance problems, stemming from improper memory allocation on certain devices. This fix ensures smoother performance across the board.
  • Messages Bug: Another notable issue fixed in iPadOS 18.0.1 involved a bug that could crash the Messages app if a user replied to a message containing a shared Apple Watch face. While this issue wasn’t as severe as the bricking problem, it was still disruptive.

iOS 18.0.1 Released for iPhones

Notably, Apple has also simultaneously declared that a similar iOS 18.0.1 update for iPhone users has just been released, addressing yet more bugs, but these were not anywhere near as severe as those impacting iPad Pro users. The iOS update does away with the same performance and Messages app ills present in iPadOS but it also addresses some iPhone problems as well. Included on this list are a bug which froze the camera and another where the touchscreen would no longer work in some versions, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro especially.

While these issues did not result in the kind of losing time we saw with the iPadOS bug, they still caused a problem serious enough to warrant an early update on all iPhones, and you should download iOS 18.0.1 to help keep your iPhone performing at its best.

Why You Should Update Now

If you own an M4 powered iPad Pro model, then it’s important that you update to iPadOS 18.0.1. In addition, it helps prevent your device from bricking and helps to run the device in better performance and stability. You do not need to worry if your iPad was unscathed by the first round of problems, the update prevents future potential issues, so you likely want to install it.

The update is out now and you can install it by opening up Settings > General > Software Update. Just as iPhone users should update to iOS 18.0.1 to eliminate recent bugs in their experience, so too should Galaxy users run 13.0.1 from Verizon.

The initial iPadOS 18 release was causing issues for Apple, and the company has quickly fixed them. As a way to ensure get a bricked or otherwise crippled iPad Pro from emerging iPadOS 18.0.1, owners of the latest iPad Pro models are no longer left in a predicament. Apple’s swift resolution to a major flaw is proof they are on a roll to deliver reliable software updates for its user base.
