Apple plans to release iOS 18, macOS 15, iPadOS 18, and other operating system updates on September 16, 2024. This means the updates will arrive before the new iPhones.

The updates promise various new features and improvements for Apple’s platforms. One notable addition in Europe is enhanced SMS compatibility with Android devices through the implementation of the RCS standard.
Both iPhones and iPads will receive more UI customization options, giving users greater control over the appearance and functionality of their devices.
The iPhone mirroring feature, which allows users to interact with their iPhones through their Macs, will not be available in the EU initially. Additionally, Apple’s AI integration will not be part of the updates released on September 16. It will be introduced in the EU with another update later this year.
Compatibility – Which Devices Run the New Operating Systems?
Most devices currently running iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma will support the new versions. This includes several generations of Intel Macs from 2018 to 2020. However, some older devices, such as the 2018 MacBook Air and earlier iPad models, are not eligible for the update.
Even devices as old as the iPhone XR and XS from 2018 will run iOS 18.
However, Apple Intelligence requires more hardware power, so AI features will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the newly announced iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, iPads with M1, M2, or M4 chips, and Apple Silicon Macs.
In preparation for the September 16 launch, Apple has released several beta versions of each operating system since June and announced the first release candidates at the “It’s Glowtime” event.
