US Indicts Russian Media Employees Over $10M Influence Scheme

The U. S. Justice Department has indicted two of Russia’s state-owned television network RT for money laundering in connection with a plan to interfere with the 2024 U.S. presidential poll. Authorities claim that those two employees used offshore companies and fake persons’ names to transfer $10 million to a certain Tennessee firm, which was churning out materials meant to polarize the American society. Both RT and Russian officials have dismissed any involvement in interfering with the American electoral processes.

Alleged Influence Campaign Through American Company

As per the U.S. Department of Justice, Konstantin Kalashnikov and Elena Afanasyeva, RT employees based in Russia, acted in scheming and entered into an agreement to infringe the U.S. money laundering and the foreign agent laws. The indictment says that RT hired a Tennessee-based technology firm to generate videos that would spread pro-Russia messages and polarize the US population. It was said that the content included in the videos is being shared on multiple protection platforms including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly known as Twitter).

The Justice Department said that the RT employees collaborated with American nationals to recruit popular conservative personalities to act as agents of the RT, who didn’t know they were promoting content paid for by the RT. The scheme was designed to help Russia’s objectives to reduce US public support for aid to Ukraine and escalate internal tensions before the 2024 presidential election.

FBI Seizes Domains in Broader Crackdown on Foreign Influence

Moreover, the FBI sought court approval to seize 32 internet domains used by Russian interference in the foreign sphere according to Reuters. Some of this is related to ongoing efforts to prevent foreigners, including Russia from meddling in US elections. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland continued to reaffirm the government’s readiness to deal with any interferences that may be orchestrated by foreign nations.

In regard to the accusations mentioned by the agency, RT responded sarcastically, saying that such remarks were expected. On the other hand, the Russian officials went on downplaying the accusations of election meddling in the United States. Kalashnikov has not been arrested but flees to Russia while Afanasyeva is also still on the run in Russia, and the case has not been closed.
