Amazon is making serious efforts in the artificial intelligence race by incorporating Anthropic’s Claude language model in Alexa. According to Reuters, this update is described as a major update since the relaunch of Alexa with greater intent on enhancing all aspects of the digital assistant to make it smarter and more user-friendly, capable of responding to the users’ needs.
Previously, Amazon depended mostly on its own technology to support Alexa. Nevertheless, this development faces quite rapid advancements in AI, especially when competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT are threatening Amazon to seek partnerships. Claude, created by Anthropic, in which Amazon has a minor stake, is a more intelligent and secure AI that is capable of more realistic and elaborate conversations and works better in complex situations. This upgrade is not only an attempt to level up with the competition but to carve a new track and create a new benchmark for any voice assistant solution.
Why Amazon Chose Claude AI for Alexa’s Evolution
Amazon chose to switch to Anthropic’s Claude AI for its reimagined Alexa for several reasons. At first, the models of AI within Amazon were not up to the mark, it took six or seven seconds to respond to the prompts which was considered a major drawback for a better user experience. Claude provided more impressive results where the model scored better at handling complex queries in a more efficient manner, making it a better choice for Amazon’s massive goals. Furthermore, the efforts to introduce paid service of Alexa to earn billions of revenues were best implemented with a proven and accurate AI.
Thus, through Claude, Amazon plans to provide customer service with additional sophisticated functions allowing them to continue a conversation based on the previous communication, provide shopping recommendations, or perform additional customer tasks like writing an email or ordering a meal. This also fits with Amazon’s broader approach of utilizing AI including partner models to provide the best potential customer experience.
While Amazon tends to use in-house solutions that allow it to control users’ interactions and respective data, Anthropic is an exception due to the key focus on the pragmatic need to build competitive AI within the fast-growing market. This decision points to the fact that 2024 remains a decisive year for Alexa to demonstrate its ability to deliver significant sales and compete with rivals.
Amazon’s Shift to External AI Partnerships
Historically, Amazon has not depended on outside technology in any way to retain complete control over user interface, data, and customers. Nevertheless, it is not the only company in need of partnerships to improve AI products. Major tech companies such as Microsoft and Apple have for example partnered with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT in their products.
The internal release of the “Remarkable Alexa” is expected to occur in October while a sneak peek is likely to be given during the company’s annual devices and services event in September. The next major event will be the first public sighting of Panos Panay, the new head of devices, who took over the position last year from David Limp.
The expanded availability of ChatGPT in late 2022, which delivers full-sentence responses to lengthy questions nearly instantly, led to an investment and corporate action to create better AI software for different tasks such as images, videos, and voice. This appeared to make Apple’s Siri, which was launched about a decade ago, look outdated, said Amazon workers.
While Amazon has the notion of ‘working backwards from the customer’ to build new services, some employees within the Alexa team pointed out that there was a trend of the company reacting to AI rivals. There is also doubt among the employees on whether the public will be ready to part with an additional $60- $120 per year for a newly charged subscription service since most have to first afford the $139 for the current Prime subscriptions.
Alexa Upgrades
The paid version of Alexa planned for the future should be able to continue a conversation based on previous communications. This new version of Alexa will be able to shop for you, for instance, picking clothes for a trip and compiling news articles. It also intends to perform more complicated assignments, such as preparing emails and buying food, from a single command.
The new Alexa could be a robust home automation controller and would remember the needs of the customers like waking up during the morning or recording a show that airs at that time. However, the release could be delayed or altered if the technology does not meet certain internal benchmarks.
