Domainfactory is currently informing paying customers about an upcoming change that many are not happy about. The hosting provider intends to remove email accounts it classifies as “inactive.” Customers are criticizing this unilateral contract change and the improper monitoring of their accounts. The provider sees the measures as covered by the general terms and conditions.

According to an email obtained by Golem.de, Domainfactory plans to begin deleting all customer mailboxes that have not been used via POP3, IMAP, or browser to “read new emails or access old emails” within the last 30 days, starting September 14, 2024. Inactivity can be prevented if emails are sent “via our SMTP servers.”

The measure is justified as necessary to “maintain and optimize the performance of our email systems.” Domainfactory customers pay the hosting company, among other things, for the provision of email accounts. Sometimes, the email functions are also resold by Domainfactory customers as a service to their own customers. Some products in Domainfactory’s range are designed precisely for this purpose.

Domainfactory Customers Must Act Regularly

From September 14, 2024, Domainfactory customers will need to ensure that one of the above-mentioned actions is carried out at least every 30 days to prevent email accounts from being deleted. If Domainfactory customers have their own customer base, they will, in turn, have to inform their own customers about the future restriction.

There is no indication in the company’s email that mailbox deletion also applies to forwarders. Customers can learn more about this in a company support article, which states that forwarders will not be deleted if customers “use a forwarder without their own mailbox.”

The situation is different if a mailbox is used with “rule-based forwarding.” Customers must use all mailboxes according to the guidelines described above to prevent the mailboxes from being classified as inactive.

According to the provider, the deletion of mailboxes cannot be undone.
