Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred takes us to one of the most popular zones in the franchise: Nahantu, featuring the Kehjistan metropolis Kurast. The iconic docks of Kurast, where adventurers arrive in Diablo 2 after their fight against Duriel, have now been compared graphically on YouTube, offering interesting insights.

“Well, I gave you my word and brought you here as promised. But by all that is holy, I would never have returned to this accursed place. This stinking jungle cannot be the once-proud Kurast. I do not know what these evils are, my friend, but you must stop them. I only pray that you can do it before the jungle devours the last remnants of my beloved homeland.”
With these words, ship captain Meschif welcomes you in Diablo 2 after your arrival in the jungle region of Nahantu (formerly simply “Kehjistan” in Diablo 2), south of Kehjistan. The capital city of Kurast lies in ruins after the arrival of the Great Evils and their infernal hosts, just like Corvus, Viz-Jun, Caldeum, Old Tristram, and countless other cities in Sanctuary, whose inhabitants believed their prosperity would last forever.

Kurast in Diablo 2
The Kurast Docks are the safe haven that players head to in Diablo 2 (Resurrected) in Act 3 to pursue Diablo and Baal. All of Kurast has been corrupted by Mephisto, forcing the few survivors to retreat to the docks. The mage Ormus has protected them with spells, but even that didn’t last long. Later in the act, the player is tasked with obtaining the Gidbinn, a dagger that Ormus can use to recharge the wards. The Lord of Hatred must be defeated to save Kurast, and all quests except the first are directly related to Mephisto.
In Kurast itself, the houses were built of stone. Narrow streets ran through the city. The metropolis was roughly divided into three parts: Upper Kurast, Lower Kurast, and a bazaar in the middle. Upper Kurast housed large buildings, with a temple and reliquary towering over the city. Lower Kurast was the poorest part of the city, intended for workers and a good place to hide. The city was connected to Travincal by a causeway. After Mephisto’s raid, Kurast suffered a double blow. First, the population was decimated by the roaming demons, and second, unbridled jungle growth began, fueled by Mephisto’s power. As the jungle consumed Kurast, it became difficult to tell where the jungle ended and the city began. Soon, the only refuge left was the Kurast Docks.
Kurast in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred
Kurast will return in Diablo 4 as part of the Vessel of Hatred expansion. As the capital of the Nahantu region, the marketplace, Kurast Bazaar, will be the central hub. Unlike almost all other hubs in Diablo 4, Kurast Bazaar will include unique features, such as a training ground and a World Tier statue. Previously, Kyovashad was the only other city to contain these structures.
