In the expansive landscape of this year’s gaming releases, Tekken 8 emerges as a title of significant importance. Set to rival stalwarts like Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1, and The King of Fighters XV, it’s a game destined to captivate a vast audience. Yet, beneath its glossy exterior lies a crucial issue: accessibility options, or the lack thereof, for those with visual impairments.
A recent Twitter clip, under a minute in duration, showcased Tekken 8’s attempt to accommodate color-impaired gamers. The clip revealed character designs featuring distinct line patterns: vertical for one, horizontal for another. Proclaimed as an innovative stride in gaming, this move towards inclusivity holds promise. But with progress comes a nuanced predicament.

Morgan Baker, the accessibility lead at EA, expressed distress over the striped “color-blind” filters in Tekken 8. In a poignant plea, he shared, “Kindly refrain from tagging me in those ‘color-blind’ stripe filters from Tekken 8. It triggered an aura migraine, and I cannot afford another episode or worse. Much appreciated, everyone.”

A user on the platform echoed similar distress, “Terrible migraine since I saw that thing… Can’t even sleep due to the pain. The striped filter caused an instant bout of vertigo just from accidentally glimpsing the 2-3 second clip. It’s perilous.”
In response to these assertions, Katsuhiro Harada, the game’s director, took to Twitter to defend the color-blind filters. He acknowledged positive feedback regarding accessibility settings, highlighting that few misunderstood or solely judged the options based on a brief video, without truly experiencing them within the game. He clarified, stating, “We have never claimed or advertised that these options cover color vision for all players; there might be exceptions.”
