In retrospect, Steam casts its gaze over 2023, unveiling the most played and sold games over the past twelve months. This year has witnessed a deluge of launches, infiltrating a list that also features perennial names. It’s a testament to why companies strive for success in the realm of service-based gaming. Concerning revenue, Steam refrains from offering precise figures, categorizing games into Platinum (1st to 12th), Gold (13th to 24th), Silver (25th to 50th), and Bronze (51st to 100th).

Recent Releases and Success
Among the best-sellers are recent releases like Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, Sons of The Forest, Modern Warfare 3, and Hogwarts Legacy. Alongside these stand several service-based games including Counter Strike 2, PUBG, Lost Ark, Destiny 2, Apex Legends, and Dota 2. Except for Call of Duty, all these titles have also amassed over 300,000 concurrent players. Notably, Cyberpunk 2077, a 2020 release, stands tall among the best-sellers. Meanwhile, the free-to-play Goose Goose Duck boasts high player engagement but doesn’t match up in revenue.
Gold Category: New Entries and Established Successes
Descending to the Gold category of top sellers, we encounter Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon and Resident Evil 4. These new launches are accompanied by stalwarts like Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), Elden Ring, and Rainbow Six Siege. Some of these titles also feature among those garnering over 150,000 players concurrently, joined by Rust, Lethal Company, Path of Exile, and The Finals. Meanwhile, games like Cities Skylines 2 and Remnant 2 have secured over 80,000 players. In revenue within this category stand Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, The Sims 4, and Sea of Thieves.
