Twitch Updates Usage Policy, Permits Nudity in Artistic Representations

The streaming platform Twitch has recently unveiled revisions to its usage policies. Now allowing specific forms of previously prohibited sexual content, provided they are adequately categorized and flagged with warnings. The new rules sanction artistic representations—be it drawn, animated, or sculpted—featuring “completely exposed breasts and/or genitals or buttocks of feminine presentation, regardless of gender.”

Content Guidelines and Categorization

Under these revised guidelines, content creators must label their material as having sexual themes. However, simulated sexual acts or masturbation remain forbidden. While the platform still prohibits streamers from being partially or fully nude, it now permits content that “deliberately focuses on breasts, buttocks, or pelvic region,” along with “body writing” and body painting on “breasts and/or buttocks of feminine presentation, regardless of gender.”

Moreover, dances such as “twerking, rubbing, and pole dancing” are now allowed without requiring a specific label or warning.

Unchanged Stance on Gaming Content

However, the platform has not altered its policy regarding streaming games “featuring nudity, pornography, sex, or sexual violence as a primary focus or characteristic.” For games where nudity isn’t the primary focus, an adult content advisory must be added.

Introduction of Content Rating Labels

In June, Twitch introduced content rating labels, acknowledging that while certain content might be permissible on the platform, it might not be suitable for all audiences. These updates aim to provide clearer guidelines and warnings for viewers and creators alike.
