The iPhone Can Now Access Windows 11 in the Cloud Through This New Microsoft App: Here’s How It Works

iPhone Can Now Access Windows 11 in the Cloud Through This New Microsoft App. The application is compatible with Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, and Remote Desktop. To use Windows 11 in the cloud, an active subscription to any of these mentioned services is required. Since the introduction of cloud gaming, with platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna, owning a console is no longer essential for gaming. This has allowed us to enjoy our favorite games, even AAA titles, across a wide range of devices, as long as we have a good internet connection.

However, this formula doesn’t apply to personal computing. It’s nearly impossible to do without a computer if we need to use Windows daily. But something is changing at Microsoft, evident in the new “Windows App” that provides access to the operating system, for instance, from an iPhone.

Windows without a computer and from anywhere

Microsoft announced Windows 365, a business service that essentially offered Windows in the cloud, several years ago. Shortly after its launch, we had the chance to try this alternative and discover some of its advantages and flaws. Well, Windows 365 has continued to evolve.

Following the launch of Windows 11, it embraced support for this operating system as well as Windows 10. Now, as mentioned earlier, there’s a new application available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and iPadOS (not Android). This is Microsoft’s new focal point for delivering its Windows cloud service across multiple platforms.

What does the new Windows application allow? It enables access to our Windows session from mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and even web browsers. Just like a streaming gaming platform, everything promises to be private, and a computer is not necessary.

Windows App not only provides access to Windows 365 but also to other Windows Cloud services like Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft Dev Box, and Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services. The downside is that access to this application, as well as Windows in the cloud, is limited to corporate clients.

As we noted in our tests in 2021, the service offering is channeled through two subscriptions: Business and Enterprise. Plans start from 31.30 euros per month for a virtual machine with a dual-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and 128 GB of storage (some subscriptions offer a free trial).

This doesn’t mean that Windows in the cloud won’t eventually reach the general public. According to documents from the legal battle between Microsoft and the FTC, Satya Nadella’s company plans to offer Windows 365, or some equivalent, to all users, although it’s a long-term plan.

How to download the new Windows App?

Windows App is still in active development, and the final version hasn’t been released yet. However, it’s already available for testing. On Windows, simply download Windows 365 from the Microsoft Store and click on “Preview” to enable the new Windows App with all its functionalities.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, the application is available through TestFlight. TestFlight, as a reminder, allows installing beta applications in the Apple ecosystem. This means that the applications might have bugs and may request to share certain information with the developer.
