Review of Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 Mobile Workstation

As the name suggests, the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 (referred to as ThinkPad P16v) is a spacious 16″ mobile workstation. Weighing 2.2 kilograms, it’s a substantial laptop. It’s important to note that it will also require carrying a 170W charging device, which adds another 500 grams.

What is WorkStation?

A workstation can be likened to a precise tool that serves its craftsman in their profession. It is worth noting that the power of a workstation lies not only in high-quality hardware but also in software support and service assurance.

Choosing the Right Workstation

Often, in an attempt to save money, people opt for cheaper alternatives like gaming laptops, which may not be suitable for their specific tasks. In situations where a workstation is essential, these alternatives fall short and hinder productivity. In such cases, the cost of compromise can outweigh that of investing in a proper workstation.

ISV Certification for Mobile Workstations

Mobile workstations are certified by Independent Software Vendors (ISV), including Adobe, Autodesk, and others. This certification ensures compatibility between business devices, such as workstations, and software. In the rare event of a software error, the ISV acts as a safety net, providing users with necessary software patches.

Purchasing Considerations

Workstations are primarily available through the manufacturer’s partners. Capital, as a partner of Dell and Lenovo, offers such devices. It is crucial to provide precise information to the seller about the desired workstation and its intended use. This allows the sales specialist to recommend the most suitable device for the task.

Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 is constructed from high-quality plastic, both on the top lid and bottom. The top lid’s plastic is resistant to fingerprints, which is a nice touch. The back of the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 features red accents near the ventilation openings. Otherwise, the laptop sports a uniform greyish tone, which is fitting for a device of this class. The iconic ThinkPad logo still retains its glossy finish, adding a touch of distinction.

Ports and Accessibility

Some ports, including charging and two USB Type-C ports, are located at the back of the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1. On the sides, you’ll find HDMI, memory card slots, full-size USB ports, and headphone jacks. These are pushed towards the user’s side to allow space for the cooling system. In my opinion, HDMI should have been placed at the back, and the placement of the chunky USB Type-A on the sides is not ideal for a 16″ laptop.

However, the RTX 2000 boasts more Shader Units and 2 GB of additional video memory. It’s important to note that the RTX 2000 doesn’t utilize gamer-centric drivers.
