Google introduced “Help Me Write” in Gmail in June 2023, and now Gmail Voice Compose seeks to enhance this AI-based convenience. AI tools have reached all kinds of services and industries, and for good reasons. Gone are the days of unstable voice recognition and misbehaving mobile assistants. Voice recognition with AI technology works wonders, naturally; as this was one of the early proposed uses of large language models. The newest feature in Gmail will allow you to use this to create professional emails just by speaking on the phone.

Gmail Voice Compose Functions Like “Help Me Write”
The “Help Me Write” feature in the Gmail apps on Android and iOS allows users to draft emails from text snippets. Users write the key points about the subject of their email, and AI does the rest. “Help Me Write” not only saves time but also drafts a complete and professional email from just a few lines of informal text. Voice Compose seems to work the same way but by listening to the user speak instead of having them write.

As discovered by TheSpAndroid, version 2023.12.31.599526178 of the Gmail app for Android contains a new feature accessible by toggling a flag value. This feature allows you to record yourself while writing an email by tapping the microphone button. When finished recording, clicking “Compose” will have the AI create your email from the recording. Although very similar to the “Help Me Write” feature, Voice Compose is definitely faster and more convenient.
How Does AI Speech-to-Text Conversion Work?
AI speech-to-text conversion is much more accurate in deciphering what someone says than older speech recognition models. The leap in capability was almost shocking but also very understandable when you understand how LLMs (Large Language Models) work. Large Language Models, in a very simplified way, are thought of as “word predictors.” That is, they predict which word should come after the last one.

This definition does a disservice to the complex neural network that LLMs possess, but it helps understand how speech recognition works. Older speech recognition models used to analyze each sound and try to figure out which word it was. This often led to completely nonsensical sentences. AI speech recognition not only listens and analyzes each individual word but compares everything that has been said before and guesses what has probably just been said. That’s why AI voice recognition is far ahead of older models; there’s some intelligence behind it.
Gmail Voice Compose is expected to be launched soon, as it has reportedly been in development since October of last year. If it works as well as other AI voice-to-text models, it will be a significant advancement in terms of convenience for Gmail app users.
