What is WorkStation?

A workstation can be likened to a precise tool that serves its craftsman in their profession. It is worth noting that the power of a workstation lies not only in high-quality hardware but also in software support and service assurance.

Choosing the Right Workstation

Often, in an attempt to save money, people opt for cheaper alternatives like gaming laptops, which may not be suitable for their specific tasks. In situations where a workstation is essential, these alternatives fall short and hinder productivity. In such cases, the cost of compromise can outweigh that of investing in a proper workstation.

ISV Certification for Mobile Workstations

Mobile workstations are certified by Independent Software Vendors (ISV), including Adobe, Autodesk, and others. This certification ensures compatibility between business devices, such as workstations, and software. In the rare event of a software error, the ISV acts as a safety net, providing users with necessary software patches.

Purchasing Considerations

Workstations are primarily available through the manufacturer’s partners. Capital, as a partner of Dell and Lenovo, offers such devices. It is crucial to provide precise information to the seller about the desired workstation and its intended use. This allows the sales specialist to recommend the most suitable device for the task.

Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 Design and Build Quality

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 is constructed from high-quality plastic, both on the top lid and bottom. The top lid’s plastic is resistant to fingerprints, which is a nice touch. The back of the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 features red accents near the ventilation openings. Otherwise, the laptop sports a uniform greyish tone, which is fitting for a device of this class. The iconic ThinkPad logo still retains its glossy finish, adding a touch of distinction.

Ports and Accessibility

Some ports, including charging and two USB Type-C ports, are located at the back of the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1. On the sides, you’ll find HDMI, memory card slots, full-size USB ports, and headphone jacks. These are pushed towards the user’s side to allow space for the cooling system. In my opinion, HDMI should have been placed at the back, and the placement of the chunky USB Type-A on the sides is not ideal for a 16″ laptop.

Display of Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1

The reviewed Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 features a straightforward display with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 (16:10 aspect ratio) on a 16-inch screen, running at 60 Hz with an IPS panel and a relatively modest brightness of 300 cd/m². This brightness level is sufficient for indoor use. The 1920 x 1200 resolution on a 16-inch screen provides an approximate pixel density of 141 PPI.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 sports the beloved and classic ThinkPad keyboard, complete with the distinctive red TrackPoint. It also includes a numeric keypad, which many will find handy for daily tasks. It’s easy to see why ThinkPad enthusiasts have access to a separate ThinkPad TrackPoint keyboard, as the ThinkPad keyboard is exceptionally comfortable and well-crafted.

Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 Gen 1 Battery Life

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 boasts a substantial 90 Wh battery, delivering nearly 8 hours of operation in the PC Mark 10 Modern Office Battery test on a single charge. It’s worth noting that while the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 is powerful, the not-so-bright 1080p+ display might leave some wanting more in terms of battery life.

Performance

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 is equipped with an Intel Core i7-13800H processor and an NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada (8 GB GDDR6) graphics card. These components are robust, with the RTX 2000 graphics card being based on the same AD107 GPU used in NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 and RTX 4060 laptop graphics cards. However, the RTX 2000 boasts more Shader Units and 2 GB of additional video memory. It’s important to note that the RTX 2000 doesn’t utilize gamer-centric drivers.

Storage

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 employs a very fast 1 TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD manufactured by SK hynix.

In the Passmark PerformanceTest 9.0, this laptop achieved a respectable score of 5708 points. It’s essential to remember that this is not a gaming laptop, so video performance might slightly impact the results.

Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 Review Conclusion

The Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 is a powerful and well-constructed mobile workstation. Enthusiasts of Lenovo’s high-end laptops will find everything they desire in the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 . Its 16″ screen size with a 16:10 aspect ratio is favored by many, although the cheaper variants will have to make do with a 1080p+ resolution, which might not be ideal for certain applications.

The cooling system is effectively implemented, although under heavy load, the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 ‘s processor can reach temperatures of up to 100°. The positioning of the ports may not be the most convenient, likely influenced by the cooling system.

In most cases, the Lenovo Laptop ThinkPad P16v Gen 1 will serve as a sturdy workstation that predominantly stays on a desk. While it can be carried around, with the 170 W charger in tow, it adds substantial weight to the overall package.
