Motorola and Sharp Sign Cross-License Patent Agreement

Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo, and the Japanese electronics company Sharp, have announced a significant global agreement involving cross-licensing of patents related to wireless communication technologies from each organization.

According to Lenovo, the agreement was reached after both companies assessed the fair value of each other’s portfolios, demonstrating a willingness to license on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory terms.

“Our cross-licensing agreement with Sharp exemplifies two companies coming together with mutual respect for each other’s investment and innovation,” stated John Mulgrew, Vice President and Global Head of Intellectual Property at Lenovo.

Mulgrew emphasized Lenovo’s commitment to all negotiations and licensing agreements, whether the company is the licensee or licensor, as a demonstration of respect for investments and innovation.

Sharp distributes mobile phones in Japan and exports devices to other regions worldwide. The new patent agreement with Motorola could expedite the development of new devices compatible with 4G and 5G connectivity standards.

Such agreements are commonplace in the technology world. In addition to Motorola, Sharp has also entered into similar cross-licensing partnerships with Huawei and other major players in the global technology industry.
