Fans of Mortal Kombat 1 were dismayed by the decision of Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios to offer a paid Halloween Fatality. This is especially considering that we’re talking about a game that costs $69.99 in its cheapest edition, and not a free-to-play title with microtransactions.

Fatalities are undoubtedly the main attractions of the Mortal Kombat franchise and were responsible for making the game stand out in the early 90s, a legacy that continues even now, 30 years later.

After the notes from the latest update of Mortal Kombat 1 mentioned “Halloween Fatality added to the Premium Store,” players were surprised. One of them then went to X to ask Warner Bros. what steps were needed to access this Fatality, and the response was that it would be sold in the premium store this Friday (27), which sparked outrage among the fans.

Hi, thanks for this question about MK1! The Halloween Fatality will be featured in the Premium Shop at a later date, we expect this to be Friday (10/27). Please keep an eye on official Mortal Kombat social media for any news on this topic!

It’s worth noting that this is not a new development in the franchise, as in the 2011 Mortal Kombat, it was possible to buy packs of classic Fatalities. However, it’s been quite some time since then.

Players’ indignation was expressed in places like Reddit (1, 2) and X (1, 2), as some of them had paid nearly $109.99 for the Premium Edition of Mortal Kombat 1 and are now finding out that NetherRealm Studios plans to charge extra for new Fatalities they include in the game.

The community is now waiting to see how much the Halloween Fatality will cost. Warner Bros. Games needs to be cautious about this, as it’s clear that aggressive monetization in a paid game is not something fans will tolerate.
