A 38-year-old man residing in Tokyo, Japan, was arrested by Japanese police last Tuesday, October 17 on suspicion of engaging in stalking within Final Fantasy XIV. “Stalking” is the English term used to describe individuals who pursue others, making physical or psychological threats.

In the case of the man apprehended in Japan, he was accused of sending 22 threatening messages to a 28-year-old woman, urging her to talk to him and not ignore him, lest he reveal their previous private conversations to her family.

Regrettably, his harassment extended beyond the online game. He was also charged with sending these messages through social media platforms such as Line and X (formerly Twitter). Within the game, he would shadow the victim’s character without permission while sending these messages. He persisted in pursuing her even after being blocked.

The man claimed not to be in love with the woman and denied some of the charges brought against him. Nevertheless, Japanese police assert that his actions still directly violate Japan’s law prohibiting stalking, established to protect individuals targeted by this type of behavior.

No additional details regarding the suspect’s arrest have been disclosed.
