Addressing High-Growth Markets

The collaboration, as outlined in a statement released by Intel, targets high-growth markets such as laptops, communication infrastructure, and networking. By harnessing Intel’s manufacturing capacity in the U.S. for FinFET transistor design, the partnership aims to deliver efficient chip foundry services, leveraging UMC’s reputation and design support.

Production Plans and Timeline

The new 12nm process node is slated to utilize manufacturing capacity across Intel’s Fabs 12, 22, and 32 at the Ocotillo technology manufacturing site in Arizona. This approach, utilizing existing fab equipment, is expected to significantly reduce upfront investment requirements. Production for the 12nm process is scheduled to commence in 2027.

This collaboration underscores Intel’s ongoing investment in the U.S. semiconductor industry. Earlier this year, the U.S. government announced additional subsidies for chip manufacturing facilities operated by both Intel and TSMC. Stuart Pann, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel Foundry Services (IFS), emphasized the commitment to working with innovative Taiwanese companies like UMC to better serve global customers.

“Taiwan has been a critical part of the Asian and global semiconductor ecosystem and broader technology landscape for decades, and Intel is committed to collaborating with innovative companies in Taiwan, such as UMC, to help better serve global customers,” stated Stuart Pann.

UMC’s Track Record and Client Base

With over 40 years of experience, UMC has established itself as a leading provider of foundry services for critical applications, including automotive, industrial, displays, and communications. The company boasts a client base exceeding 400 semiconductor firms, further solidifying its position in the industry.

This collaboration between Intel and UMC not only strengthens semiconductor manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. but also underscores the importance of strategic partnerships in driving innovation and meeting the evolving demands of global markets.
