Envision a future where smartphones are obsolete, replaced by a discreet pin seamlessly affixed each morning, akin to any other garment. This is the vision Humane, founded by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, seeks to bring to fruition with their groundbreaking AI-driven wearable, the AI Pin. The company’s ambition extends beyond mere innovation; it aspires to redefine the human connection with technology, marking the advent of a new era in personal devices. Speak to send a message, tap twice to answer a call, and witness information projected onto your hand – the AI Pin embodies the transformative potential envisioned by Humane.
AI Pin by Humane: A Novel Personal Device Concept
Humane generated significant anticipation with its debut product, the AI Pin. While its long-term success remains uncertain, the offering is undeniably innovative, though accompanied by a substantial price tag and a monthly subscription.
When considering the AI Pin, it’s essential to view it as distinct from a smartphone. This initial version encourages users to perform various tasks without relying on their iOS or Android devices.
The AI Pin: A Two-Piece Wearable
The AI Pin consists of two components: the AI Pin itself and its rechargeable complementary battery, attachable magnetically to any garment. The device’s core includes a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle camera and a “laser ink screen” projecting onto the user’s hand.
In terms of resolution, the projection reaches 720p, requiring the user to maintain a distance between 20 cm and 40 cm. The Trust Light system illuminates with a different color for each device activity, visible to everyone.
Privacy and Notifications
Humane addresses privacy concerns through a mechanism indicating the device’s operation. For instance, a green light signifies image capture, while an orange light indicates microphone activity.
The AI Pin subtly delivers notifications through an RGB “beacon,” associating colors with calls, messages, alerts, and more. Equipped with dual microphones, a speaker (compatible with Bluetooth headphones), LTE, and 3G connectivity, it ensures comprehensive functionality.
Powerful Hardware Inside a Compact Design
Housing a Qualcomm Snapdragon octa-core processor with undisclosed specifics, the AI Pin boasts 2.1 GHz speed, 4 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage, Wifi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, light sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and more.
Voice commands are essential for device control, complemented by natural language, touch gestures, and hand movements on the touch surface. The hand can also serve as a “screen” for various functions within the Cosmos operating system.
Balancing User Control and Device Capability
The founders emphasize that the device captures images, videos, or audio only with user permission. Crucially, humane.center serves as the hub for advanced settings and houses photos, videos, and notes.
The AI Pin, available in Eclipse, Equinox, and Luna colors, will hit the U.S. market in 2024, with pre-orders starting on November 16th. Priced at $699, an additional $24 monthly fee provides T-Mobile connectivity.
