Google has decided to take a big leap to start the “era of Gemini.” As recent rumors suggested, the Mountain View firm has decided to rename Bard, its artificial intelligence chatbot, as Gemini. This means that both the application and the AI model powering it will carry the same name.

The launch of Gemini comes with a new Android app that is already available and even allows using it as a replacement for the traditional Google Assistant. It is worth clarifying that there will be, at least for now, no dedicated iPhone app for Gemini, although iOS users will be able to access the AI-powered virtual assistant from the official Google app.

But the change from Bard to Gemini is not limited to smartphones but also reflects in the web version of the chatbot. From now on, users will no longer access it through bard.google.com but through gemini.google.com.

And as if all this were not enough, Google has also officially announced the launch of Gemini Advanced, formerly known as Bard Advanced. The version of the chatbot powered by Gemini Ultra is already available, although be prepared to pay. Following the trail of ChatGPT Plus and Copilot Pro, users will have to pay $19.99 per month.

Today, we’re entering the next chapter of our Gemini era by bringing our #GeminiAI models to more of our products, starting with Bard — which will now be called Gemini. https://t.co/KFRp1qkfHg pic.twitter.com/WKHZyv3Ejp

Gemini Ousts Google Assistant on Android

If you download the new Google Gemini app for Android, you will have the possibility to interact directly with the artificial intelligence developed by Mountain View. Although it functions as a standalone application, you can set it up to take over from Google Assistant.

This means you can invoke it in the same way you currently do with Assistant. For example, by long-pressing the Home button, which appears in the center of the bottom navigation bar of Android. But that’s not all, as you can also activate it with your voice using the command “Hey, Google,” or “Ok, Google.” It is worth mentioning that Gemini still does not support all the native functions of Google Assistant, but the company is working to incorporate them.
