Fairphone has introduced its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 5. The company is renowned for its ethically produced, modular smartphones and is now also presenting a new standard for software support.

The Fairphone 5 will receive five major Android updates and eight years of security patches. Fairphone pledges to extend support until 2031, and even aims for 2033. This means users will receive a total of eight to ten years of software support.

Fairphone 5 Prolonged Software Commitment and Impressive Features

This commitment to software updates is made possible due to the choice of chipset used. Fairphone has opted for a Qualcomm QCM6490 processor. The 6nm manufacturing process and Adreno 642L GPU strongly suggest that this is a variant of the Snapdragon 778G chipset

The Fairphone 5 maintains the modular, repairable approach of its predecessors. The new phone offers ten individual modules that can be replaced, such as the microSD card slot, SIM slot, and cameras. Users can purchase these modules through Fairphone’s website or distribution partners.

Additionally, the new device boasts an impressive spec sheet. The Fairphone 5 is equipped with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage (expandable up to 2TB), a 6.46″ 90Hz OLED display (2770 x 1224 pixels, Gorilla Glass 5), and a replaceable 4,200mAh battery with a wired charging speed of 30 watts.

The camera setup of the Fairphone 5 is also remarkable. The phone features a 50MP IMX800 primary camera with OIS and a 50MP IMX858 ultrawide lens with autofocus. For selfies and video calls, there is a 50MP front-facing camera.

Further features include Android 13, Bluetooth 5.2, dual-SIM support via Nano-SIM and eSIM, dual speakers, an IP55 rating, NFC, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and Wi-Fi 6E.

The Fairphone 5 is  available for  pre order in Europe for €699.00 ($758.00). It will come in Sky Blue, Matte Black, and a transparent model.
