The company behind the break-out pure language model ChatGPT, OpenAI, is eyeing an extensive rebranding move as part of its transformational process. During a recent internal meeting, employees were introduced to a proposed new logo: a black “O” or simple ring. This design unlike its familiar hexagonal flower company emblem received diverse reactions among the consumers and enthusiasts. Fortune reported many staffers found the new logo as ominous and lack of imagination, from the previous one.

The current logo that represents “precision, potential, and optimism” has been hugely adopted as the brand logo of OpenAI majorly because of the success of the ChatGPT. What has had people talking is the decision to change to a black “O”, which employees have said made them feel uninspired. This changed course comes after OpenAI hired a new creative and design team over a year ago and was looking to redesign OpenAI’s visuals.
As reported by Engadget, one of the edits was made due to the typefaces utilized in the current logo and the one on the website. OpenAI does not own the rights to these typefaces and a redesign also gives the company a chance to build up the image of the company as it progresses towards becoming one of the great and successful global tech companies.
A New Era for OpenAI
Switching the logo is one of the large-scale changes being implemented in OpenAI at the moment. It also reveals that the company is also shifting its base from the non-profit mode of operation that it used at its initial stages. It’s said that CEO Sam Altman has recently communicated internally that OpenAI will shift back towards a more standard, profit-making company in the next year. The company was originally founded as a non-profit organization, although it operates in this way now, a non-profit organization still maintains ownership over the for-profit activities of the company.
This gradual transformation of the social licence has been taking place as OpenAI has grown quickly, and its leadership is keen to change it as a company to reflect its goals. Still, in many cases, the inputs of the employee through surveys may in one way or another affect the final decision. If internal reactions can shape the final rebranding result, it can be different from the “ominous logo” that surprised the staff.
Rebranding and Corporate Shift
OpenAI’s rebranding process looks like other corporate processes of change. The company is in the process of changing its structure and thus is set for new changes on its organizational structure. The new design symbolizes much more than the logo, as OpenAI aims to become a household brand, a going concern in the fast-growing market of artificial intelligence.
However, it is still uncertain how these changes will manifest themselves, as both an aesthetic and a commercial entity. But as the company expands, people internally and externally will want to know how this new direction is going to define OpenAI’s future.
