Elon Musk’s social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has reversed its stance and complied with Brazil’s Supreme Court after a nationwide ban was imposed. Musk, who previously resisted the Court’s demands, has now agreed to the terms set by the Brazilian government, signaling a pivotal moment in the ongoing clash between tech giants and government regulation.

Compliance After Nationwide Ban
The conflict began when Brazil’s Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, demanded that X take down content spreading misinformation and threatening the country’s democracy. Despite Musk’s initial refusal, calling Moraes an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge,” X eventually faced a countrywide ban in late August. The ban followed X’s failure to comply with the Court’s orders and refusal to pay the fines imposed.
However, as of Friday night, Musk’s company has complied with the demands, according to a report by The New York Times. In a court filing, X’s lawyers confirmed that the platform removed the accounts flagged by Moraes and paid the required fines, hoping for the ban to be lifted soon.
Legal Compliance Still Incomplete
Despite this apparent surrender, Mashable reports that Brazil’s Supreme Court stated X has not submitted all the necessary paperwork to resume operations. X named Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao as its legal representative in Brazil, a crucial requirement under Brazilian law. However, the company now has five days to finalize and submit the remaining documents, according to Reuters.
X’s compliance comes after a brief period when the platform came back online using Cloudflare’s DNS, an action the company described as “inadvertent and temporary.” In its latest statement, an X spokesperson said, “While we expect the platform to be inaccessible again in Brazil soon, we continue efforts to work with the Brazilian government to return very soon for the people of Brazil.”
Fines and Restrictions on VPN Usage
The consequences of non-compliance have been severe for both X and users in Brazil. Justice Moraes imposed daily fines of nearly $1 million on X and Musk’s satellite venture, Starlink, if they continued to defy the ban. Additionally, Brazilian users who attempted to bypass the ban using VPNs could face penalties of roughly $8,900.
This move signals X’s attempts to restore service in the country and bring the platform back legally, but full compliance is still pending. If X fails to deliver the required documents within the five-day window, the nationwide ban could remain in place.
What’s Next for X in Brazil?
Musk’s reversal marks a significant shift in his approach to government regulation, particularly after his strong resistance to censorship and restrictions on free speech. Now, the platform awaits a decision from the Brazilian Supreme Court on whether full compliance has been achieved. The saga underscores the growing tension between technology companies and governmental efforts to curb the spread of misinformation, especially in volatile political environments like Brazil.
