YouTube is rolling out a new AI-driven search carousel that highlights clips and topic overviews by creators to deepen discovery. When you search for a phrase such as best beaches in Hawaii you may see a carousel showcasing snorkel spots and volcanic coastlines pulled from multiple videos. Each clip arrives with a short, AI-generated description and a link to related videos. Premium subscribers in the US can try the feature today on searches around shopping, travel, and local activities.

How the AI Carousel Works
The new tool uses Google’s Gemini model fine-tuned on video content and creator metadata. It analyses your query to select key moments from public uploads. The carousel appears above the standard video list and gives you visual snapshots that help plan your day or refine your search. The list updates as you scroll, tapping a clip will open that video at the relevant timestamp.
Conversational AI Expands Beyond Premium
In the coming days, YouTube will widen its conversational AI experiment to include some non-Premium users in the US. This chat assistant can answer follow-up questions, suggest videos, or quiz you on concepts in educational content. Premium members have already used it to explore cooking tutorials or get deeper context on financial news. The expansion lets more viewers ask natural language questions, such as how to bake sourdough or how electric cars work.
Private Processing Protects User Privacy
Both new features run on-device or through Private Processing so that YouTube does not see your private messages or watch history. AI summaries and chat replies are generated without exposing your data to human review. The company says that even the carousel selections respect creator video privacy and copyright rules by only using publicly available content.

What’s Next
These additions follow AI breakthroughs at Google I/O and build on earlier AI Overviews introduced in 2024. YouTube plans to add more contexts, such as multi-language support and richer topic clustering, later this year. The company promises new ways for AI to enhance playlists, live streams, and Shorts discovery as it refines its recommendation engine across platforms.
YouTube’s AI search carousels and chat tool mark the next phase of helping viewers find, learn, and engage more deeply with video content. As the features roll out, more users will shape their evolution through feedback and usage patterns.
