Microsoft is laying off 6,000 people, 3% of its global employees. This is the largest round of layoffs for the company since 2023. The job cuts impact the employees in many teams, such as LinkedIn, Xbox, and overseas offices. Microsoft says the change will enable the firm to concentrate on artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing.

Why Is Microsoft Cutting Jobs?

Microsoft aims to save capital to invest in such new technologies as AI. The company is pouring billions into AI tools and cloud services. On the other hand, it is attempting to make its teams smaller and faster.

  • Focus on AI
Microsoft is creating AI applications such as chatbots and smart assistants. These projects call for a lot of money.
  • Cloud Computing Growth
Microsoft’s cloud service, Azure, is expanding at a rapid rate. The company aims to inject more money into this region.
  • Fewer Managers
Microsoft intends to eliminate layers of management. This translates as fewer bosses and more workers who do the decision-making.

How Employees Are Affected

The layoffs started in May 2025. Workers are getting emails and calls about losing their jobs. Many will leave by July. Some employees shared their sadness online. A Microsoft leader, Scott Hanselman, said it was a “day with a lot of tears.”

Teams in gaming, like Xbox and Activision Blizzard, are also hit. Earlier this year, Microsoft closed game studios like Tango Gameworks. Some workers were moved to other projects, but many lost their jobs.

Tech Industry Layoffs Continue

Microsoft is not alone. Over 53,000 tech workers lost their jobs in 2025. Companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta are also cutting staff to focus on AI. After hiring too many people during the pandemic, many tech giants are now “rebalancing” their teams.

What Happens Next

Microsoft terms these as painful yet necessary layoffs. The firm wants to be at the forefront of AI and cloud technology. In terms of workers, this implies that some will have to look for a new job. Microsoft is providing a severance package and job placement assistance. As more and more importance is given to the areas of artificial intelligence, companies such as Microsoft will continue to change. But for now, workers are hoping that the worst is over.
