The Apple Watch Journey

Series 0: The Start of It All (2015)

The first Apple Watch launched after months of anticipation, debuting as Apple’s “most personal device.” It combines fitness tracking with smartwatch features, allowing users to check notifications, make calls, and even pay with Apple Pay—all from their wrist. However, the device was hampered by slow performance, making it more of a promising prototype than a polished product.

Notable for its luxury edition crafted from 18-karat gold (priced at $10,000+), the Series 0 laid the foundation for future models, despite its flaws.

Series 1 and Series 2: Speed and Water Resistance (2016)

In 2016, Apple launched two updates simultaneously. The Series 1 improved processing speeds, while the Series 2 added GPS and water resistance, transforming the Apple Watch into a serious fitness device. The new Breathe app also introduced mindfulness features, reflecting Apple’s expanding focus on health and wellness.

Series 3: Independence Takes Shape (2017)

The Series 3 marked a turning point with the introduction of cellular connectivity. For the first time, users could leave their iPhones behind while staying connected on runs or at the gym. It also introduced a faster chip, Siri support, and a barometric altimeter for tracking elevation.

Series 4: Bigger Screens and Life-Saving Tech (2018)

With larger displays (40mm and 44mm) and groundbreaking features like an ECG sensor and Fall Detection, the Series 4 emphasized health and safety. It was a significant redesign that cemented the Apple Watch as a leader in wearables.

Series 5: Always-On Display (2019)

The Series 5 introduced the highly requested always-on display, so users could check the time and stats without raising their wrists. It also added a compass, more storage, and new materials like titanium.

Series 6 and SE: Health Meets Affordability (2020)

The Series 6 brought blood oxygen monitoring and faster performance, while the SE offered a budget-friendly alternative. Together, these models broadened Apple’s smartwatch appeal, catering to both advanced users and newcomers.

Series 7: Bigger and Better Displays (2021)

With a slightly larger screen and faster charging, the Series 7 refined the Apple Watch experience. The curved display edges added a sleek aesthetic, while the introduction of a QWERTY keyboard made text input easier than ever.

Series 8, SE 2, and Ultra: A Trio of Choices (2022)

The Series 8 introduced body temperature tracking for ovulation monitoring, improved sleep tracking, and car crash detection. Meanwhile, the SE 2 offered budget-conscious users a faster processor and essential safety features.

The Apple Watch Ultra, however, stole the spotlight. Designed for adventurers, it featured a rugged titanium build, a larger display, longer battery life, and specialized tools like a dive computer and emergency siren.

Series 9 and Ultra 2: Smarter and Brighter (2023)

Powered by the new S9 chip, the Series 9 and Ultra 2 added advanced features like the Double Tap gesture and on-device Siri. The Ultra 2 also boasted a record-breaking 3,000-nit display for improved visibility in bright conditions.

Series 10: A Decade of Innovation (2024)

Celebrating 10 years of the Apple Watch, the Series 10 introduced subtle yet impactful upgrades. It’s thinner and lighter, with a new Jet-Black aluminum finish and a wide-angle OLED display that wraps around the edges. The screen is larger and brighter, while faster charging ensures convenience.
