This information comes from a publication by ZDNet Korea (via Android Authority). It indicates that Samsung Display, the subsidiary responsible for making screens, and its partners have already finished developing the necessary parts for a triple foldable and are ready to start mass production.
The outlet reports that Samsung is considering expanding its foldable lineup with two new models that could be released in 2025. One model is the previously mentioned tri-fold, and the other is a cheaper version of the Galaxy Z Flip. However, it notes that a final decision has not yet been made.
According to the report, the mobile division of Samsung Electronics will make the final call on whether to pursue a triple foldable. Increasing the availability of these models could help improve Samsung Display’s performance, as shipments of OLED panels for foldable phones have reportedly been lower than expected this year.
Will a Samsung triple foldable arrive in 2025?
As always, it’s wise to take this information with a grain of salt. That said, since Samsung is a leader in the foldable smartphone market, it makes sense for the company to consider moving to tri-fold devices. While Samsung was the first to mass-produce phones with flexible screens, it has faced increasing competition from Chinese brands in recent years.
In fact, Chinese manufacturers have surpassed Samsung in producing triple foldables. Although these devices are still limited in availability and may have some durability issues, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design has become the first widely produced and commercially launched model of this kind. There are also rumors that Xiaomi is working on a similar device.
In this context, Samsung may need to provide its own option for the triple-folding segment. The company has strong manufacturing capabilities and established global sales channels, which could allow it to launch a smartphone with this design worldwide before its competitors. However, several factors are still uncertain.
While the Galaxy Z Fold has improved with each generation, it has lagged behind competitors in terms of design. Brands like Honor and Xiaomi have developed models that are significantly thinner while still being highly capable. Creating a tri-fold device that matches the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, which is only 0.7 millimeters thicker than the Z Fold 6, is a significant challenge.
There are also concerns about overall durability. Tri-fold devices have two hinges—one that folds inward and the other outward—which leaves part of the screen unprotected when fully closed. This could pose a significant issue for Samsung and any other manufacturer. Additionally, Huawei has struggled to provide water and dust protection for its tri-fold device.
