The “Vessel of Hatred” expansion is bringing major changes to Diablo 4. Developers are also adjusting item quality in this first expansion.
With Patch 2.0 and the “Vessel of Hatred” release, many features in Diablo 4 will change. We’ve already seen updates to the Paragon system and new difficulty levels. Now, item quality is getting an overhaul too.
Sacred and Ancestral items will be tweaked to make them more valuable and meaningful in the game.

Item Quality Changes Coming in Vessel of Hatred
Blizzard’s Comment:
We felt that sacred and ancestral items were losing their specialness and impact by becoming too common. These changes transform ancestral items into the powerful long-term items that are worth seeking out.
Ancestral Items:
- Ancestral items start dropping at Torment 1 difficulty.
- Ancestral items always drop with an item power of 800, the highest possible.
- Only Ancestral items have large affixes.
- Ancestral items always include at least one Greater Affix.
General Changes:
- Holy items will no longer drop. Any Holy items you have will get an “inheritance” tag. They can still be used but not upgraded.
- Non-Ancestral items will have a maximum item power of 750. Legendary items dropping at level 60 will always have item power 750.
- Items with 750 item power can now be completed up to four times.
- When character levels adjust in the new cross-realm Paragon system, items with power above 540 will be reset to 540. Affixes on these items will be rerolled to the highest values in their range.
When your character logs in after Patch 2.0 or “Vessel of Hatred,” many things will change. You can save special “legacy” items in the Eternal Realm bank if you feel nostalgic.
