Diablo 4: Trading Disabled – And the Reason Is as Old as Diablo 2

Currently, trading with other players in Diablo 4 is disabled until further notice. This decision was made due to an issue similar to one that plagued Diablo 2: the duping exploit.

Players hoping to trade items in Diablo 4 will be disappointed. Shortly after Season 5 began on the evening of August 14, 2024, the Blizzard deactivated the trading feature. This action was taken because of a suspected duping exploit, as announced by Community Director Adam Fletcher in a blue post.

Prices on Trading Website Plummet as Players Flood Market with Stygian Stones

According to Fletcher, the development team is currently investigating a “possible duplication problem.” It appears that a bug is circulating, allowing players to duplicate large quantities of items, crafting materials, and Stygian Stones. The well-known Diablo streamer Rob2628 demonstrates exactly how this works in the game in a video on YouTube:

In the video, Rob shows a clip from a Chinese player’s stream that demonstrated the exploit live. He further explains, using a trading website, that the exploit seems to allow the duplication of nearly all assets in Diablo 4. This is why the prices for items like Stygian Stones on the trading site briefly plummeted, as players were able to sell thousands of these stones at once.

Even after Blizzard disabled trading in Diablo 4, offers like this still exist, where a player is looking to buy 1,000 Stygian Stones for 40,000,000 gold:

On the seller’s side, prices are starting to stabilize as the extremely cheap offers have now disappeared from the platform.

According to Rob, the exploit isn’t limited to the console version of Diablo 4; it also affects the PC version. The developers responded quickly by disabling both direct trading between players and the ability to drop items on the ground for others to pick up.

Community Director Adam Fletcher has announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that their team is actively working on the issue. He also assured that they will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.

Hello from the other side of the world!

Hotfix 4 went out earlier.

We have 1.5.1 patch notes tomorrow with release next week.

Team is working on the trading stuff still and will have an update when available. 👍🏻https://t.co/BOFLGpctN6

Diablo 2 already showed the devastating effects a duping exploit can have. At one point, due to gold duplication, gold became worthless in the game, leading players to use rare items and gems as currency instead. It is still unclear when the developers will re-enable trading in Diablo 4. We will keep you updated on any developments.
