Gemini is about to integrate Spotify into its list of apps through a plugin. Google’s latest app release includes indications that AI will support the streaming music service. As seen with YouTube Music, users will be able to ask the assistant to play a song without opening the app.

According to a report from Android Authority, the latest version of Google’s APK mentions a Spotify extension for Gemini. This integration allows users to listen to a song or podcast episode through a simple prompt. For example, users can type “@spotify is playing Back in Black,” and the AI will search for the piece in the app’s catalog.
While the extension isn’t active by default, the outlet had a chance to test the feature. From initial impressions, Gemini triggers a card that briefly shows the song on YouTube Music before opening Spotify. The benefit of this integration lies not only in the ability to search for a song or album with AI, but it will also play in the background without needing to open Spotify.
To activate Spotify on Gemini for Android, users just need to type @spotify followed by the instruction (prompt). The extension will play music and podcasts and can access your playlists, playback history, and preferences. A video of the feature in action shows a noticeable delay and some errors; however, this add-on is not yet available for all users.
Gemini Aims to Make Things Easier with Spotify
If confirmed, the Spotify extension for Gemini would be available not only on mobile devices but also on the web. If we access the chatbot from our browser and type “@” we will see all the AI-enabled add-ons. These extensions can be managed directly from the Gemini settings menu.
Currently, the chatbot only supports Google apps such as YouTube, Gmail, Docs, Maps, or YouTube Music. The latter allows users to discover songs, bands, playlists, similar music, lyrics, or start a station from a specific piece. While the Spotify plugin might not offer the same options as YouTube Music, it would have a broader reach.
According to Google, extensions are Google services that work with Gemini apps and can help us do various tasks. The tech company is betting on a future where our lives will be fully integrated with AI. In theory, using other services from Gemini would make our lives easier, although that scenario is still a long way off.
Spotify users will likely prefer to open the app directly to play songs or access their playlists. Ultimately, the time spent writing the prompt is the same as doing it within Spotify.
