Playstation VR2 A Non-seller? Sony is said to have put production on hold for the time being.

PlayStation VR2, Sony wanted to attack the virtual reality market once again. From a purely technical point of view, the group has succeeded in doing this, but the headset, which costs around 600 euros, is apparently not a best seller so far. That’s why Sony is said to have stopped production for the time being.

While the PlayStation 5 continues to sell well, but still falls short of company expectations , the PlayStation VR2 has become quite quiet. It could stay that way in the near future, because even Sony may have lost some of  its trust in virtual reality.

PlayStation VR2: Sony stops producing further headsets.

As Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki writes, he learned from internal sources that Sony has paused the production of further PlayStation VR2 headsets for the PlayStation 5 . The reason? The warehouses are well filled and they want to get rid of the previously unsold specimens before ordering new VR glasses.

In principle, of course, an understandable idea, but there are indications that the headset is not selling as well as the company had hoped. According to the report, sales have continued to decline since its launch in February 2023 . However, exact numbers are not given. The reasons for the possible failure of the PS VR2 are complex: On the one hand, the high price is likely to deter many interested customers.

On the other hand, the first party offer also leaves a lot to be desired. Only Horizon Call of the Mountain and the VR update of Gran Turismo 7 were able to make a name for themselves, while otherwise third-party developers are responsible for the constant supply of software. Last but not least, the PS VR2 does not offer backwards compatibility , which means that the already limited range of games is even smaller.

It should be mentioned, however, that Sony has contradicted or at least partially corrected reports from Mochizuki in the past . So whether the journalist is right remains to be seen. However , with Sony’s large wave of layoffs, it has already been suggested between the lines that the PS VR2 may no longer be as popular.
