For some time now, the gaming community has been puzzling over the future of The Last of Us series. Even though Part II essentially concludes the series sensibly, there are still some unanswered questions and some stories that could still be told.
Speculations, Rumors and Announcement
Last summer, there was already a rumor that the third installment of the series would go into production. This was followed in early autumn by an Instagram post from Shannon Woodward, the actress who plays Dina, which further fueled the production rumors. However, with the announcement of the Part II remaster, talk of a possible production of a third part died down again.
That changed, however, with the recent release of Grounded II: Making The Last of Us Part II. This is a two-hour documentary in which Naughty Dog looks back on the production history of the game.

Neil Druckmann’s Vision
After the long look into the past, series creator Neil Druckmann also looks to the future and talks about his idea of how to continue with the IP. Druckmann has long had the idea for a story about Joel’s brother Tommy in mind, which would be set after the second part. However, the story is too short for a standalone game.
For some time, however, he has had a concept for The Last of Us, not a story yet, but a kind of rough direction. Even though it tells its own story, there is a common thread running through this unknown concept and the first two parts of the series. So, we can look forward to the coming months.
